TLC Students Share Out in Identity Showcase

At The Learning Center, students in Kate Doctor’s 11th grade English classes recently explored the question “Who am I, and why does it matter?”

“Through literature, discussion, and reflection, they examined different layers of identity — personal, cultural, historical, social, and digital — and created projects that represent their own journeys of self-discovery,” she explained.

The work culminated with an Identity Showcase in the school library, where students presented final projects for their peers and other teachers. The formats ranged from artwork and writing to digital media and interactive displays. Each project was accompanied by an artist statement that connected the student’s personal identity to larger themes of community, culture, and resilience. Doctor noted the showcase not only spotlighted her students’ efforts but also affirmed their identities in powerful ways.

“We’ve grown through our personalities and interests that define us,” said Ethan Stevens, who described himself as a proud nerd.

Like his teacher, Ethan saw how this semester’s process affected his classmates. “I’ve noticed posture and voice changes,” he said. “They’re learning how to be more social and reveal themselves to the outside.”
